Sycamore Limb -11.5" x 4.75"
The bone-white color with rose highlights helps to offset the geometrical grain and figure of this power-carved sycamore. The shape is reminiscent of sea creatures or flower petals, something Georgia O'Keefe might have made if she were a sculptor.
This object was carved green from a tree brought down by Hurricane Isaias (2020) in Brooklyn, NY. With carving, I like to follow the landmarks provided by the grain and figure of the wood. This gives the final piece a very natural feel. As the wood seasoned and it's moisture content equalized to its environment its shape naturally deformed. The splits that formed during seasoning contrast nicely with the overall delicate feel of the piece.
